LIVED AIR QUALITY – Call to Action

You can’t afford to get it wrong when it comes to breathing well, so why do we? Wales has one of the highest incidence of lung disease in Europe. The British Lung Foundation report that around one in five people have some form of diagnosed lung condition. The existing medical model copes well with the physical or organic components of illness, but has much less assurance with other factors, the most important of which are personal and psychological. In particular, the social determinants of health are not influenced at all through this model, and these wider determinants of health (such as the quality of your living space), heavily influence respiratory outcomes.

These determinants play an even greater role in people with lower income and people living in rural and remote areas and how they are affected by lung ill health. Why do spent so much time focusing on treating breathing problems as opposed to preventing them by having healthier options, for their living environments

RIW is looking for collaborators and contributors around the whole concept of “ Lived Air Quality”

Driven by four paradigm shifts: net zero, the digital revolution, Covid-19 and future flexibility by building resilience and adaptation, as well as rationalising build programmes and costs, the call for action is for Wales to translate clinical best practice into the design of repeatable suites of space such as dwellings and the embed this design thinking into advanced digital and physical engineering and manufacturing to improve the health, wellness and wealth of the population of Wales and support the wellbeing of future generations.
